While we are all still staying close to home and Summer is now upon us, the notion of backyard entertaining and BBQ feasts are top of mind. But how about steering away from the traditional BBQ and instead think PIZZA! 

Who wouldn’t want to make great pizza at home? How about a brick pizza oven in the backyard? Hosting parties would be a breeze and allowing your friends and family to make their own custom gourmet pies….how fun is that?? But the “real brick and mortar” ovens can be very costly and require permits and space requirements so essentially not easy to get the real deal. However, there are alternatives and affordable pizza ovens out there that reach the same high temperatures to make these delicious pizza making machines a reality. 

Essentially there are two main types of pizza ovens. One being gas and the other wood fired. Gas ovens typically rely on a gas line or a propane tank which provides cooking consistency. Wood-fired ovens tend to give a smokier flavour but often require more chef awareness during the cook time. And some ovens even offer a combination of the two. 

Here are a few portable options that are our faves. 


Ooni Frya 

(Wood Fired) 

For most people who are looking for an oven that can make pizzas that are even better than the ones that you order from restaurants, consider Ooni Fyra. It is an amazing, portable, wood-fired oven that can cook incredible Neapolitan-style Pizzas in just 45 seconds or less.

Do not get fooled by its compact size as it produces more power than your average indoor oven and its sleek design will add to any backyard decor.

This surprisingly affordable high-quality oven can be used as both a wood fire oven and a gas roaster. This both makes it easier to fire up when using it as a wood fire oven (and makes maintaining the temperature simpler and a bit more hands off), while giving you a bit of an option to use it as a quick gas oven for foods you don’t necessarily want or need to use wood for.

The compact design makes it easy to move around when you need it, while being sturdy enough that you don’t have to worry about damaging it if you’re even a little bit uncareful with it. Despite the small overall size, it is perfectly proportioned for restaurant style pizzas.

The oven overall is very well built and is perfectly portioned to retain heat for quick and even cooking. It comes with everything you need to get started. This includes a cordierite stone, a scoop, and a fuel tray for whatever the fuel of your choice is (charcoal, wood pellets, wood chips, etc.).

Although a little on the heavier side this is another great portable option. This wood-fired pizza oven and smoker is ideal for cooking and smoking pizza, fish, meat, vegetables and so much more. 

It cleverly has hinged legs and a removable chimney for fast set ups and easy breakdown – ideal for portability. This tough oven reaches a maximum temperature of 350 – 380°C and is ready to cook in just 10-15 minutes. It’s perfect for larger gatherings as it cooks up to 14″ pizzas in approximately 60 seconds!

The stainless-steel housing uses wood pellets, hardwood or charcoal but the optimum fuel is a mix of wood pellets with fine kindling which gets the fire blazing.

Keep in mind that being portable and with a long chimney it is not ideal for windy days.
