Michael Bastian, a fashion designer from upstate New York, boasts an impressive set of credentials. Following a move to Manhattan in 1987, he began working as a buyer at Abraham & Strauss, and would later transition to increasingly high-profile roles at Sotheby’s, Tiffany & Co., and Ralph Lauren. It was during his time as men’s fashion director at Berghdorf Goodman that he made the decision to pursue a line of his own, and thus his eponymous label was born.
Bastian’s work has been continually lauded and recognized by awards and publications; five-time nominee and 2011 winner of the CFDA Menswear Designer Of The Year Award, he was named in GQ’s 2016 list of the ten best menswear designers in America.
Michael Bastian’s entire line is designed in New York and made in Italy. When it comes to seeking inspiration, Bastian is all about looking inward. There’s an unofficial rule of thumb that if you want to know what’s hot, look not at what designers make, but what they wear. Bastian seems to have found a balance between his own identity and the more elaborate runway.
I consistently go back to myself: What am I looking for or wanting to wear myself right now that I don’t already have?…I always figure if I’m looking for it, a lot of guys are.
