Paris, New York, Milan; chances are, when we think of high fashion, these are the hubs that come to mind. But the runway is expanding its international reaches, and some of the world’s most exciting new designs are coming from cities and countries that might surprise you. Budapest, Warsaw, Seoul — these centres are home to many of the world’s up-and-coming designers, and their cutting edge, often subversive designs are shaking up the couture scenes and traditional catwalks.
Of course, exciting new labels require models to showcase their apparel. And just as new fashion hubs are popping up all over the globe, so too are the models tasked with ushering a designer’s vision into the real world. Canada is home to a contingent of exciting — and striking — male models. The best way to familiarize yourself with the scene? Social media, of course! Here are four Canadian male models whose accounts will infuse your daily grind with a little class, fashion, and joie de vivre.
Simon Nessman is a twenty-eight-year-old male model from Courtenay, British Columbia. As the current face of Giorgio Armani, he’s achieved a considerable amount of fame as one of the highest-paid male models in the world. Nessman has been featured in ad campaigns for Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and Calvin Klein. This year he took part in Ralph Lauren’s 50th anniversary show, and has walked the runways for many other legacy brands.
Nessman got his start in the business after one of his sister’s friends sent his photo to a Canadian modeling agency. He moved to New York City to pursue modeling as a career after high school, but chose to return home shortly after to earn his bachelor’s degree from Quest University. An avid naturalist, Nessman now splits his time between modeling and working as the director of Cedar Coast Field Station in Tofino, British Columbia.
Noah Mills is a thirty-five-year-old model and actor from Toronto. Since 2003, Mills has been a fixture on the runways for Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and Michael Kors. He also posed nude in Dolce & Gabbana’s fragrance campaign alongside supermodels Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer.
Mills broke into the acting world in 2010 with an appearance in Sex and the City 2, alongside fellow Canadian Kim Cattrall. He also played the part of Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend in her music video for the song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Mills has had some exposure on TV as well; he appeared on 2 Broke Girls, an American television sitcom that aired on CBS from 2011 to 2017, and in 2019 he is set to star in NBC’s drama The Enemy Within.
Gabriel Aubry is one of the most recognizable faces in fashion due to his prolific ad campaign appearances and high profile past relationship with Halle Berry. Aubry has modelled for a long list of brands including Valentino, DKNY, and Versace. People Magazine featured Aubry on its “Most Beautiful People” list in 2012. That same year he was among the top-earning models in the world. Aubry holds the distinction of being the only model to appear on the cover of L’Uomo Vogue while also appearing in four separate ad campaigns within the same magazine. On the heels of his modelling success, Aubry opened Cafe Fuego, a restaurant in the East Village of Manhattan.
In 2005, Aubry began dating actress Halle Berry after meeting her during a Versace photoshoot. In 2008, the couple announced the birth of their daughter Nahla. After their separation late that year, Aubry entered into a lengthy custody battle with Berry, which eventually ended amicably.
Montreal-based Tom Lariviere is represented by Folio, one of the country’s most respected modelling agencies. He has appeared on the cover of Homme and in editorials for Dress to Kill. Lariviere has worked on campaigns for a number of Canadian brands, including Frank + Oak, Simons, and this year’s casual blazers from RW&CO. He has also done many projects with Quebec singer Caroline Neron, who chose him as the face of her fragrance for men.
Lariviere has also done some acting work, appearing in the movie Frenemies (2012), the television show Trop (2017–2018), and most recently in Radio Canada’s series Hubert et Fanny, the first season of which aired earlier this year. He has also starred in the music video for The Killers’ single “Run For Cover.”
