Bringing Paradise Home

Outdoor living has grown in popularity and for good reason. Being outside in our own private space offers us a chance to relax and regroup from our hectic lives and enjoy the fruits of our labour at home. Over the years, I have created all kinds of magic in yards throughout the GTA as more and more folks invest in their outdoor spaces. With the rise in fuel these days and the stresses of cottage traffic it just seems to be the more practical solution.

Creating an amazing outdoor oasis doesn’t need to be over the top however I admit that my inner child would have me build something really unique – like a whimsical tree house, one that would serve both kids and parents alike. It would be a great place to read in the shade or just socialize with your friends. It would certainly be a conversation piece amongst your guests at your next backyard gathering. Although I am a fan of fantasy, keep in mind that if you are going to create a theme it must be sustainable. I don’t love themes outdoors as much as I don’t love distinctive themes in kids rooms: like pirates or princesses. As peoples interests’ change, what works today might not work in the future. Incorporate practical and long-lasting elements like a putting green or a half-court basketball feature. Another interesting and fun idea is to integrate a fireworks area for the kids, which is both creative and practical. Fire pits and fireplaces are always useful and kids and adults both like gathering around them. They also allow you to enjoy the outdoor setting well into to cooler months.

As a lover of technology I also like to include it in my designs. Waterproof outdoor televisions are now common place & the same goes for environmental speakers. The most suitable speakers are those that blend into your landscape. Carefully consideration should be taken when placing the speakers to allow for rich surround sound throughout the yard without bothering your neighbours.

Lastly consider enhancing the serenity of your oasis by incorporating an elegant water feature. A simple water fall or even a sophisticated winding creek can add tranquillity while drowning out any street traffic or other neighbourhood noises.

All in all, it is possible to transform your backyard from ordinary to extraordinary. All you need is a small amount of time and some big dreams to bring paradise home.
